Email from my Dad, Father, Parent
By Nick | April 3, 2008
Happy Birthday Nick!!
I suppose everyone gets introspective during their birthday but those involved in that birth do the same thing. I remember so many moments about the day you were born and the days since. Your birth made me a dad, father and parent all at the same time. It was years later before I understood that those names all have different responsibilities. I am proud to say I was pretty good at some and sad to say not so good at others. Although it is often said that anyone can be a father I believe there is more to the father designation than a “donor”. Life is for learning and the lessons I learned from your grandparents made me the parent I am today. You made me very happy to be a dad. You also made it very easy. You made me look good as a parent! So I celebrate with you your birthday. Thanks for being “Nick”.
I love you,
D

That is so great! You two are really something else…nothin’ but love baby. I have never known anyone who loves their mom and dad as much as you do. Most wait until it is too late to see what they were missing but you are grateful every day, that is just another reason why I adore you and your mom and your dad (and your grandparents and your sisters…)

The finest words any parent can say, “You made me look good as a parent.” I suppose I could put that in reference to teaching too…to tell a student that they made me look good as a teacher, I imagine would feel pretty right on to the student and to me.
I guess you know I’m stealing your dad’s line…heh, well, I am, it’s way too relevant not too, and it makes me all lumpy thinking about it.
