Twenty Thirteen
By Nick | April 3, 2008
Being that today is my birthday, I decided to take the day off of work and have a “Me” day. I got up at 9:00am (super late for me), slugged around the house for a while, went out to a lovely Mexican lunch with Christy, got a visit from my mom and an old family friend, and then started painting.
I have all of these wonderful art supplies in a trunk in the living room and a box in my closet, but never find the time or the motivation to use them. And this is something that always pisses me off. I need to start making the time to do art, its in my blood, but I always talk myself out of it. I get motivated one day and then the next there is nothing. And many times it is months before I pick up a brush or a pencil with the intent of making art.
In honor of my birthday I decided to make a self portrait using acrylics and screenprinting techniques on canvas. It was a blast to make…and turned out ok I think. Who knows…I may add to it. It is titled “Twenty Thirteen”…the meaning behind Twenty Thirteen is the fact that today is my 33rd birthday. I like to think of it as Twenty Thirteen instead of 33. And I encourage everyone to use that for their upcoming birthdays…It works for many.

I really like this piece, I like the way it gives an illusion of who you are, it has layers of under painting, silk screen and then more acrylic, just like a person, it’s layered in complexity. I like layers, and I like implied lines, and I particularly enjoy looking at pieces that are a little more far removed from reality.
Excellent work Nick, and the cool thing I suspect is that it didn’t feel like work now did it?

Nick, sorry that I didn’t say happy birthday on your birthday but instead I will say it now happy birthday.
Hope it was a good one too. And knock it off about the 33 year old thing! My next birthday I will be 48! 50 is just around the corner. However do not fret, inside I am 16!
btw, I cannot wait to see what you are doing with the silkscreens!
