You know you live in the South when…

..you see this in the grocery store. I have never seen one of these in my life and quite frankly hope I never do again, at least no house that I live in. What the hell would you need this for? Isn’t the goal to keep grease consumption down to a minimum.? That’s what my colon tells me anyways.

My grandmother (Asheville, NC) had a bacon grease can on her stove and she added a bit here and there to her “southern style” cooking. I always thought it was kinda gross, but when she died I took that can and cleaned it out and it is in my cabinet full of nails and screws adn such. No more grease but it makes me think of Mama Edith every time I open it. Maybe that is why her recipies just are not as good when I make them, no grease.

Reminds me of a guy that lived a couple apartments down from me in college – his name (or at least what everyone called him) was “FatBack” – I betcha his momma had one of those! ;)

We all know we’re not supposed to eat that way, but for generations before us, that was the norm. I think it is really about balance. Because I wouldn’t want to live without grease either.

mmmm….bacon….
perhaps this is NOT that sort of grease dispenser…perhaps it is instead a Grease! Dispenser…when you open it you hear Travolta and Olivia Newton-John songs?

Nick, obviously you have never eaten at a fire station! Most of the old time FD cooks have a grease container that is similar.
