    An Old Garden Gate

    By Nick | June 11, 2008

    An Old Garden Gate

This is an old gate to one of the many gardens at the Rotunda on the campus of UVA.  Apparently, this is one of the oldest sections on campus.  The thought that Thomas Jefferson used to walk those gardens gives me chills.

That is VERY cool! I am a huge fan of old doors… and trees. I am a weirdo.

Love the image. I get the same chills when I visit the Wythe House in Williamsburg where he sat and studied law.

It reminds me of the quote President Kennedy made at a dinner for all living American Nobel lauriates at the White House:

“There has never been a greater concentration of intellectual power here at the White House since Thomas Jefferson dined alone.”

Make me wonder if he was sneaking some of the wimmin slaves out there for a late night snack in those gardens.

I spent many years wandering the grounds of UVA in the late 60s and early 70s. The gardens are my favorite spots on campus. When I was there all the building were open, like the Rotunda, all night and all day long. No pass, no ticket, no one watching. It was a beautiful time.
