Vintage Addition to My Surfboard Quiver

I just picked up this board from my friend Austin of Austin Surfboards.  This brings my quiver up to 8 boards (I am a little insane).  It was from his personal collection.  He got it a few years ago from a guy who had it stored under his house for 20 some odd years.  Austin took it in, sanded it down and reglassed it.  It hasn’t been ridden since.

It’s a vintage Hobie Pig-shaped Longboard with a glassed on wooden D-fin.  I attempted to get some information from Hobie, but the email response I got back said that all of their records pre-late 80s were accidentally thrown out in a warehouse move.  He could not give me any info based on the board’s serial number.  That being said, I went to Longboard.net and submitted a post on the forum.  The guys there assured me that this board is from the early 60’s.  More than likely it was a stock board shaped in 1962.  That’s the era in surfing that fascinates me.

I’ve always wanted to have equipment that was used before all the advances in surfboard shaping were made.  I wanted to surf a board that demonstrates to me what the guys in surfing’s golden-era had to work with.  Judging by the weight and rails on this board, it will not be very forgiving.  This thing is a barge.

I can’t wait to take it out.

If you’re interested and want to see more pictures, they can be seen here, here, here, here, and here.

      Sweet!

I have two other words : where’s mine!

Good for you Nick. That’s a really sweet board. Also that was a very modern shape for the time period too.
