Do You Smell Something?
By Nick | September 24, 2008
Have you ever smelled something and have it transport you to somewhere? I am not talking about Star Trek style transportation…I am talking about memories. There are several smells that when I am near them, they make me remember something or feel like I am somewhere I have been before. I may not be making sense, but let me give you an example.
Whenever I smell Gear Lube or Motor Oil I am instantly taken back to my parent’s auto parts store that they owned years ago. That store was such a HUGE part of my life for 26 years. Every time I smell automotive related chemicals, I am instantly in the back of that store putting away inventory. I hated putting parts away then, but now I miss it a little.
Another smell that takes me somewhere else is Irish Spring soap. My grandparents in Charlottesville always buy that. Every time I am in a shower with a bar of Irish Spring, I instantly feel like I am standing in the shower at my grandparents’ farm. Kinda freaky.
What smells “transport” you?

When I would go in the back of the cafeteria at the school where I work I would smell the natural gas that they were using to cook and this would remind me of my grandmothers kitchen and the wonderfuls meals she would make.
Smelling fresh paint would remind me that right before every Christmas my parents would roll up the rugs and put a fresh coat of paint on the walls before the holidays. So I guess you could say latex (the paint) reminds me of Christmas.
