Yesterday I Lit a Candle
By Nick | January 19, 2009
“It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.” My grandfather used to tell me that all the time…and it is something that has resonated throughout my life. I even venture to say that I hear that saying in my mind at least once a week. When I was younger I never really knew what it meant. As an adult it takes on much more meaning…I only wish that I could follow that advice more than I do.
Yesterday I lit a candle. My father and I were driving back from Charlottesville in my Subaru Outback and my dashboard was rattling and squeaking something fierce! It tends to do that when it is cold outside. Yesterday, however, it was rattling more than I could stand. It was so annoying and I couldn’t take it anymore! I tried holding my hand up there to apply pressure. It worked, but it wasn’t practical.
I started to run through ideas in my mind…and came up with a solution. I jammed a pen in between the dashboard and the windshield. The cool thing about this solution (see image above) is that I will never be without a pen when I need it. So I guess I lit two candles.

But if you have a horrible accident you’ll poke your eye out!
