davmo and the Young Guns!

First off a big thanks goes to my good friend, Dave, aka Davmo, for allowing me into his art studio and for showing me his collaging technique. To say that he was an inspiration would be a huge understatement. I have enjoyed his artwork and his friendship for a few years now. Thanks Dave.

This is my first attempt at a mixed media collage. The title of the piece is “It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.” For the most part, the theme of the piece is based on my grandfather’s career in the military while working for the CIA. He was instrumental in the development of a spy camera system that was used during the cold war. Many of the images, diagrams, and text you see in the piece came from papers, books, and notes that I found while going through an old trunk of his.

I am pleased with how it turned out and am super excited about starting many more of these.

Mixed Media Collage Complete!

What do guys do when there’s a fire? We burn stuff!! Matt, Christy, Elsa and I were hanging around Matt’s chiminea last night…and things needed to be burned. Fireworks, check. Jiffy Pop, check. Marshmallows, check. Metal?….CHECK! We pulled this bolt out of the fire while attempting to become blacksmiths. It was a short lived career.

Fire! Fire! Fire!

This weekend I went down to Austin’s surfboard factory to see what was going on. He’s recently taken a liking to shaping some wooden boards. He’s working with balsa, paulownia, and redwood. If you thought that shaping a board out of foam was a lot of work, take a look at this! He has to actually chamber the wood panels to reduce the weight of the board. I can’t wait to see how this board turns out.

Afro Dude

It seems to me that non-designers think that the only fonts available to them are the ones that are pre-installed on their computers. All the time, when designing logos, I have clients send to me the fonts that they really love and want to use in their logo. Thank goodness I haven’t run into anyone wanting to use Comic Sans or Chiller in their logos, but many times the font that they choose is just as bad as those.

I am here to tell all you non-designers that there is a whole world of fonts available out there at your disposal! Some of them are even free!! And the ones that aren’t free usually aren’t outrageously expensive. Do some research and spread your wings!

When it comes to your business logo you really need to consider using really decent fonts! Don’t settle for Arial or Times New Roman. Get out there, look around. I guarantee that you will find something out there that is better suited for your logo. The more choices you have the better, right?

Inside My Head Resides

I was browsing through an artists marketplace called Etsy the other day and came across this print and it made me laugh right out loud.  Its by an artist from Maine names Erin Ellis.  The drawing and watercoloring on the peice are great!  I had to have it, so I bought it and it came in the mail today…along with another print of hers that has a lobster holding a kite.  Check out her Etsy shop here.  She has lots of other interesting drawings and crafts available for sale.

 And for those of you that have never heard of Etsy, you really need to spend some time browsing through the site.  There are thousands of artists that offer unbelievable items at killer prices!!  It is definitely an excellent resource for unique gifts for that person who is difficult to buy for.  I know that this year, most of my Christmas shopping is going to be done right there an that site.  Great stuff.
