Last night I took my sister to see Andrew Bird in concert up in Richmond. I have been wanting to see this guy live for so many years. We got there a little early and were fortunate enough to find a spot right in the front….Callie had her elbows resting on the stage.

The show was awesome….a HUGE sound that made you actually feel the music. Not loud, just big….if that makes sense. Andrew’s use of loops, whistling, glockenspiel, violin, and guitar all in one song….BY HIMSELF…is something to behold.

Yesterday we went up to my grandparents’ for New Years and the family’s huge Christmas get together (there were 17 of us there). My cousin Orion was there from California…I hadn’t seen him in several years. I got to talking to him and I found out he had a few bands going on. When I got home last night I hopped on the computer to check out their web site. They are called The Switch Ups and they rock! I was blown away when I heard it! Check them out! http://www.myspace.com/theswitchups Orion is the bassist (the blond guy in the middle). They sort of remind me of the Stiff Little Fingers.

Awesome stuff, Orion! I hope I can get out there to see you guys live!

In Rainbows Nominated for Album of the Year

Hackensaw Boys at The National, Richmond, VA

My youngest sister Callie lives up in Richmond and this summer started taking mandolin lessons from a guy up there that is in the bluegrass band called The Hackensaw Boys. Being a fan of bluegrass, I was stoked to hear that! I had heard of them, but never had the opportunity to see them live.

Last night my mom and I made the trek up to Richmond to go to see them with my sister at the National. I was blown away. These guys really kick some serious ass and are now one of my favorite bluegrass bands. I can’t wait to see them again!

I know that bluegrass isn’t everyone’s thing, but if check out the video below if you are so inclined.

It really chaps my ass when I think about the murder of John Lennon. Think of all the things that we and his family missed out on just because some psycho a-hole ~~was trying to impress a girl.~~ EDIT (That was John Hinckley that was trying to impress Jodie Foster when he attempted to kill Reagan….I am a little dense. Thanks for correcting me Dave!!)

Happy Birthday, John. You would have been 68 today.

My dad’s band is playing this weekend in Newport News. If any of you are in the area, you should check them out! They are really a great band. And on top of that, the bar has a gazillion types of beer there!

Gene Simmons can KISS it!

Gene Simmons from KISS claims that Radiohead’s concerts are boring. WTF!? Yes it is true that I am a bit biased, but I don’t know where he gets off thinking that the concerts are boring. With the LED lights and videos, it is quite a show. Sorry they arent putting on a Gwar-like performance (Gwar does rock by the way) and spraying the crowd with flames and stageblood, Gene. Both times I saw them I enjoyed the visuals immensely. Maybe the fact that their music has substance means that they don’t have to, as Gene says, “blow shit up”. Pyrotechnics are cool and all, but why don’t you guys (KISS) back it up with some evolving music that sees past the 80s?!

Radiohead Deluge, Bristow, VA

This past weekend was the trip to Northern Virginia to see Radiohead. It was a great trip and a great concert, but we could have done without the rain. We got to Bristow making great time. On the way we stopped off in DC to go to the National Gallery of Art, ate lunch there, visited some exhibits, and then headed to the hotel. That’s when it started to rain.

It rained the entire show. Fortunately we had seats under the awning (sorry Ryan and Susie!!). That didn’t mean we weren’t soaked though. My shoes are still soppy two days later.

To give you a visual, many roads were flooded and one even was washed out. Several poor souls sat in line for hours in their cars only to be turned away by the cops because of the unsafe road conditions. If that were me I would have been furious. We must have been some of the lucky ones. We arrived at the venue from our hotel in about 8 minutes and when the show was over we were out of the parking lot and back to the hotel in about 15. Good karma pays off I suppose.

The setlist was awesome! I am surprised that I still have a voice since I was singing the entire time. Definitely a worthwhile trip and the best Radiohead experience I have had so far. Can’t wait for the next one!
