This weekend I went down to Austin’s surfboard factory to see what was going on. He’s recently taken a liking to shaping some wooden boards. He’s working with balsa, paulownia, and redwood. If you thought that shaping a board out of foam was a lot of work, take a look at this! He has to actually chamber the wood panels to reduce the weight of the board. I can’t wait to see how this board turns out.

A Craftsman at Work

I’d like to say I was in a knock down drag out fight…or that I was training for a cage fight, but unfortunately I can’t. I got this nice little shiner on Friday while surfing at Croatan by the Jetty.

I was on a nice little wave going down the line when I lost my footing and fell directly into the rail of my surfboard face first. I guess it could have been worse. I could have ended up with a fin up my ass.

Nick Gets a Shiner

Here’s a picture of me and my buddy Bart on our 12 hour road trip to the OBX and back.

We met up at 6am Sunday morning with hopes of epic surf down at Cape Hatteras, NC. After stopping into Grandy for some sweet potato biscuits and buttery grits (I promise those aren’t stripper names), we made our way all the way down the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. At first, the conditions looked grim. The seas were pretty out of control and choppy. Then we made our way deep into the Hatteras Cove and found exactly what we were looking for. Breezy off-shore winds and head to overhead high sets rolling into shore.

As always with Bart, he had me laughing the entire trip. That, along with the beautiful weather and meeting up with a group of Bart’s surfing pals made for an awesome day! And this time, we didn’t even come close to getting struck by lightning!

When are we going again, Bart!?

OBX Swell

Coming up on October 24th (next Friday) there is a benefit event for a guy known by many as a Virginia Beach treasure.   Pete Smith was on the surfing scene starting in the 60s and was a big influence on east coast surfing…especially in Virginia Beach!

The Noblemen of Virginia Beach are having an event to benefit Pete!  He will be auctioning off much of his vintage surfing memorabilia.  I looked at the list and there is some really cool stuff in there!  I have my eyes on a few of the posters that will be up for auction.

Anyways, if you are involved in surfing and in town next weekend you should definitely check this out.  Movies will be playing, stories will be told, and most importantly fun will be had.

In the famous word’s of Pete Smith…..COWABUNGA!!

For Pete’s Sake

Come out o Sandbridge this weekend and support the 7th Annual March of Dimes Ride for a Cause Surfing Event.  Its a small surfing contest with a bunch of goofy divisions that is a lot of fun.  Last year I participated and it was a blast.  Can’t wait to surf in it this year!

Ride for a Cause Surf Contest

In this video you will see me after the first guy gets up and rides to shore. Look in the background and you will see me catch the wave and ride it in to shore. Crappy video, but then again what do you expect from a $130 point and shoot camera. Better than nothing I guess.

The Dog Patch at San Onofre State Beach

California was great.  I surfed my heart out and Christy got her share of the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, La Jolla, and Coronado.

The above picture was taken at one of my favorite spots called Swami’s looking south (the break is looking north…more pictures of that soon).  I just love the cliffs and ruggedness of the California coastline.  The challenge of getting a longboard down those cliffs with a girlfriend in tow is just half the fun.
